Bonzo's Grand National: A Canine Caper by George Studdy This delightful photograph print captures the whimsical world of Bonzo, the beloved small dog creation of British artist George Ernest Studdy. In this scene, Bonzo and his brethren stage their own version of the Grand National, a famous horse race, on a makeshift course. The excitement is palpable as they eagerly participate in the competition, some even getting a little too enthusiastic and taking a splash in the open ditch. Bonzo, with his saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding, first graced the pages of The Sketch magazine in 1922. The Bonzo craze that ensued was a global phenomenon, leading to an outpouring of merchandise including postcards, annuals, toys, and more. Studdy's depiction of Bonzo and his friends engaging in a Grand National race is a testament to the joy and camaraderie of the sporting world, even when played out by a cast of canine characters. The image, dated March 1923, is a charming snapshot of the 1920s and the enduring appeal of this iconic dog. George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948) was a prolific artist whose work captured the hearts of generations. This photograph print is a reminder of the delight and nostalgia that Bonzo and his antics continue to bring to audiences today. Credit: Estate of George Studdy/Gresham Marketing Ltd./ILN/Mary Evans
