Bonzo gets the surprise of his life by George Studdy

Bonzo gets the surprise of his life -- Bonzo introduces himself to Radio Rex, the electric toy consisting of a dog who jumps abruptly from his kennel in response to any sharp sound acting on his " vibrator". George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), was the creator of Bonzo, a small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding who first appeared in the Sketch in 1922. The Bonzo craze swept the world resulting in postcards, annuals, toys and other merchandise. Credit should read: Estate of George Studdy/Gresham Marketing Ltd./ILN/Mary Evans Date: 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
Bonzo: The Surprised Canine Prodigy Encounters Radio Rex in this Captivating 1923 Illustration by George Studdy In this delightful and humorous illustration by renowned British artist George Ernest Studdy, Bonzo, the beloved small dog with saucer-like eyes and indiscriminate breeding, is seen in a state of shock as he encounters Radio Rex, an electric toy dog. The image, published in The Illustrated London News in February 1923, showcases Bonzo's wide-eyed expression as he recoils from the sudden jump of Radio Rex, who responds to any sharp sound by leaping abruptly from his kennel, thanks to his hidden "vibrator." Bonzo, who first graced the pages of The Sketch in 1922, quickly captured the hearts of the public, leading to a global craze that saw the production of postcards, annuals, toys, and other merchandise. Studdy's illustrations, with their witty humor and charming depictions of everyday life, captured the spirit of the 1920s and continue to delight audiences today. In this particular scene, Bonzo's surprise and shock are palpable, as he is caught off guard by the unexpected reaction of his electric counterpart. The image is a testament to the enduring appeal of Studdy's creation and the joy that can be found in the simplest of moments. This illustration is part of the extensive collection of George Ernest Studdy's works held by the Estate of George Studdy, represented by Gresham Marketing Ltd. and available for licensing through Mary Evans Picture Library.
