EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases two intriguing species of snakes: the Boa constrictor and the Emerald Tree Boa, scientifically known as Corallus canina. The Boa constrictor, a large and powerful snake native to Central and South America, is depicted in the foreground, its muscular body coiled around a tree trunk. Its skin is patterned with dark blotches and bands, providing excellent camouflage in its natural habitat. Boa constrictors are known for their hunting technique, which involves constricting their prey with their powerful coils and suffocating them. In the background, the Emerald Tree Boa, a smaller and more slender snake, can be seen draped over a branch. This arboreal species is native to Central and South America as well, and is characterized by its vibrant green coloration and distinctive pattern of black spots and rings. Emerald Tree Boas are excellent climbers and are often found in rainforests, where they hunt primarily birds and small mammals. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving are a testament to the skill of the engraver, and it serves as a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these two fascinating snake species. The illustration is a reminder of the rich scientific and artistic traditions of the late 18th century, and a reminder of the enduring allure of the natural world.
