EDITORS COMMENTS
Blanche of Navarre, Queen Consort of France (1330-1398), is depicted in this stunning handcolored copperplate engraving by Leopold Massard from the publication "French Costumes from King Clovis to Our Days." The queen, dressed in the regal attire of the late medieval period, wears a ceremonial cape adorned with damask fabric and a velvet bodice, both rich in texture and color. The cape's wide sleeves are lined with ermine fur, adding an air of luxury and warmth to the ensemble. The queen's coat of arms, proudly displayed on her chest, bears the blazon of Navarre and Evreux. The shield is quartered, with the first and fourth quarters representing Navarre, featuring a golden castle on a red background, and the second and third quarters representing Evreux, displaying three silver fleurs-de-lis on a blue background. The queen's elaborate headdress, made of fine fabric and adorned with pearls and precious stones, completes her regal appearance. Blanche of Navarre was the daughter of Philip the Bold, Count of Evreux, and was married to King John II of France in 1350. She was a significant figure in French history, serving as queen consort for over 40 years and acting as regent during her husband's absences. This beautiful engraving captures the elegance and power of the queen, a testament to the grandeur of the medieval court.
