EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate print depicts Blanche of France, the eldest daughter of King Louis IX of France, also known as Saint Louis. The portrait, drawn and engraved by Leopold Massard for the publication "French Costumes from King Clovis to Our Days," captures Blanche in her youth, around the years 1240-1243. She is shown wearing a gold band in her hair, signifying her royal status, and a long veil that covers her head and chest. Underneath the veil, Blanche wears a tunic with a high neckline and long sleeves, which is typical of the medieval fashion of the time. Over the tunic, she wears a royal coat of arms, proudly displaying the fleur-de-lis symbol of the French monarchy. The robe she is wearing is richly decorated with intricate patterns and embellishments, adding to her regal appearance. Blanche was born on February 1, 1226, in Poissy, France. She was a pious and devoted daughter of Louis IX, who was known for his strong faith and commitment to the Crusades. Blanche herself became a patron of the arts and a patroness of various religious orders. She died on December 25, 1243, at the young age of 17, leaving behind a legacy of charity and devotion. This beautiful and intricately detailed print offers a glimpse into the fashion and style of the medieval period, as well as a glimpse into the life of a young princess who would become a revered figure in French history.
