This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two distinct species of lampreys: the Big-eyed Lamprey (Entosphenus vitreum) and the Red Lamprey (Eudontomyzon marschmanni). The illustration is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The work was overseen by renowned naturalists Hippolyte Cloquet and Jean-Gabriel Pretre, with the engraving executed by Massard under Pretre's direction. Jean-Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845) was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's menagerie and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in this exquisite engraving, which showcases the unique features of both lamprey species. The Big-eyed Lamprey, also known as the Glass Lamprey or the Transparent Lamprey, is characterized by its large, bulging eyes, which provide excellent vision in the dark waters where it dwells. Its body is elongated and eel-like, with a dorsal fin and a distinct, downward-pointing mouth filled with suction discs. The Red Lamprey, on the other hand, is easily identified by its bright red coloration and the absence of eyes in its adult form. Instead, it relies on its highly developed sense of touch and electrolocation to navigate its environment. This lamprey species is also known for its ability to breathe air through its skin, allowing it to survive in oxygen-poor waters.
