For seven long weeks, the people of Leiden endured a brutal blockade, facing starvation and disease. Despite their hardships, the citizens refused to surrender, and their resolve was rewarded when a relief force, led by the Count of Mansfeld, arrived on September 28. The Spanish, weakened by their own supply shortages, were unable to withstand the onslaught, and on October 3, they retreated, leaving Leiden in Dutch hands.
