EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic Avro 504K E3404, a vintage biplane from The Shuttleworth Collections, which was built in 1915 and meticulously rebuilt by Avro apprentices following the end of the Second World War. The Avro 504K, a two-seat biplane trainer, played a pivotal role in the early years of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force, producing over 8,000 examples between 1913 and 1918. This particular aircraft, E3404, was assigned to RAF Upavon during the 1960s. Its most notable claim to fame, however, comes from its appearance in the 1956 film "Reach for the Sky," which chronicled the life story of the legendary WW2 RAF pilot, Sir Douglas Bader. The film, which starred Kenneth More as Bader, portrayed the Avro 504K as an essential part of Bader's early flying career. The Avro 504K in this photograph, with its distinctive green and brown camouflage paint scheme, stands as a testament to the rich history of aviation and the indomitable spirit of those who have taken to the skies. Its presence in the film "Reach for the Sky" serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of Sir Douglas Bader and the many pilots who have shaped the annals of aviation history.
