In the early days of World War I, the British Army found itself in urgent need of transportation to move men and supplies to the Western Front. With the railways already in use to transport troops and munitions, the Army turned to an unexpected source for additional transport: horses from local railway stables. In this evocative photograph taken in 1914 at Bexhill, soldiers are seen commandeering horses from the stables for Army purposes. The horses, which had been used to pull trains, were now being pressed into service to pull artillery and supply wagons. The soldiers, dressed in their khaki uniforms and armed with rifles, work quickly and efficiently to harness the horses and attach them to the wagons. The horses, some of them clearly agitated, are led out of their stalls and onto the train platform. The scene is one of haste and urgency, as the war effort required the Army to move quickly and efficiently. The soldiers, many of them volunteers, were doing their part to support the war effort, even if it meant taking horses away from their peaceful stables. The photograph captures a moment in history when the civilian world was being transformed into a military one, as the country prepared for the long and brutal conflict that lay ahead.
