Ara Pacis Augustae, or the Altar of Augustan Peace, is a magnificent ancient Roman monument dedicated to the goddess Pax, or Peace, and her personification, Pax Augusta. This stunning frieze on the south side of the altar, dating back to 13-9 BC, depicts a procession led by Augustus himself, the first Roman emperor, with his cloak drawn over his head as a sign of reverence. Augustus is accompanied by the Rex Sacrorum, or high priest, four priests, and a lictor, who carries an ax as a symbol of authority. The scene takes place on the Campus Martius, an open field in Rome, which was the site of military training and public gatherings. The altar was erected to celebrate the peace and prosperity brought about by Augustus' reign and to honor the Senate and the Roman people. The intricate reliefs on the frieze depict various scenes of the imperial family, military victories, and the goddesses Venus and Roma, emphasizing the connection between the emperor, the Roman state, and the divine.
