EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork depicts the Antipodes Island Parakeet (Cyanoramphus unicolor), a rare and endemic bird species found only on Antipodes Island, located in the southernmost part of New Zealand. Painted by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans for Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," this illustration was created in 1888. The Antipodes Island Parakeet, also known as the Antipodes Island Sparrow or the Antipodes Island Kakariki, is a small parrot with distinctive green plumage. The bird's beak is grey, and its eyes are bright red. The Antipodes Island Parakeet is the only parrot endemic to the Antipodes Islands, and it is considered a flightless bird due to its short wings. The Antipodes Island Parakeet was once abundant on the island, but its population declined significantly due to introduced predators such as rats, cats, and ferrets. The bird was thought to be extinct for several decades until it was rediscovered in 2003. Conservation efforts have been implemented to protect the remaining population, and the bird is currently listed as critically endangered. This beautiful watercolor painting not only showcases the unique beauty of the Antipodes Island Parakeet but also serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.
