1697 1756 Anna Knight Married Nugent Thrice Craggs Newsham

EDITORS COMMENTS
Anna Nugent, born Anna Craggs, was a remarkable woman of the 18th century who lived an intriguing life marked by three marriages. The print depicts Anna in her later years, around the time of her third marriage to Robert Nugent. Anna was first married to John Newsham in 1718. The union produced five children, but the marriage did not last long, and they were divorced in 1725. Anna's second marriage was to John Knight in 1727. This union was also brief, and they were separated by 1730. Despite the short-lived nature of her first two marriages, Anna's third marriage to Robert Nugent in 1732 proved to be a long and fruitful one. Robert was a wealthy landowner and Member of Parliament, and together they had eight children. Anna's third marriage brought her not only financial security but also social status. Anna's life was not without controversy. Her first divorce was scandalous, and rumors of infidelity and financial mismanagement followed her throughout her life. However, she was known for her beauty, charm, and intelligence, and she managed to maintain a certain level of respectability despite her marital history. Anna Nugent's life spanned from 1697 to 1756, making her a woman of great historical interest. Her story is a testament to the complexities of 18th-century society, where marriage was a matter of social and financial advantage, and personal happiness was often secondary. This print captures a glimpse into the life of a woman who defied the conventions of her time and lived on her own terms.
