Village Scene - Ivory Coast - 1940s

Village Scene - Ivory Coast - 1940s - French West Africa was a federation of eight French colonial territories in Africa: Mauritania, Senegal, French Sudan, French Guinea, Ivory Coast, Upper Volta, Dahomey and Niger. The capital of the federation was Dakar. The federation existed from 1895 until 1960. The houses are raised on stilts (pile dwellings) to protect from flooding. This is also obviously a coastal or riverside community as there are large fishing nets drying on poles close to the houses. Pile dwellings can still be found in the Ivory Coast in places such as Ebrie Lagoon. Date: 1947

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1947, captures a tranquil moment in the life of a coastal village in Ivory Coast during the 1940s. The scene is set in French West Africa, a federation of eight French colonial territories in Africa, which included Ivory Coast. The village, with its unique architecture, is built on stilts (pile dwellings) along the coast or riverside to protect against flooding. The raised houses are a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the villagers, who have lived in such communities for generations. The photograph reveals a vibrant and bustling community, with large fishing nets drying on poles, indicating the importance of fishing to the local economy. The villagers, dressed in traditional attire, are engaged in various activities, adding to the lively atmosphere. The calm waters of the lagoon in the background add to the serene beauty of the scene. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of a community in Ivory Coast during the 1940s, a time when the French colonial rule was still in place. The pile dwellings, a distinctive feature of the region, can still be found in places such as Ebrie Lagoon, making this photograph a valuable record of a unique aspect of African history and culture.
