Amalia Consort Duchess Frederica Holstein Maria Oldenburg Otto Xixth Holstein Gottorp

EDITORS COMMENTS
Amalia of Oldenburg, Duchess of Oldenburg (1818-1875), is depicted in this elegant engraving from the 19th century. Born as Princess Amalie Pauline Auguste Frederica of Oldenburg, Holstein-Gottorp, she was the eldest daughter of Duke Friedrich Wilhelm of Oldenburg and his wife, Princess Augusta of Hesse and the Rhine. Amalia's life was marked by significant royal marriages. In 1841, she wed Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, with whom she had five children. However, her most notable union was her marriage to Otto I of Greece, which took place in 1836. Otto was the first King of Greece, and Amalia served as his Queen Consort until his death in 1867. This engraving captures Amalia at an age when her beauty and grace were at their peak. She is depicted wearing the traditional attire of the Oldenburg ducal family, with a simple yet elegant headdress adorning her head. The intricate detailing of her dress and the delicate folds of her shawl add to the overall elegance of the image. The period in which Amalia lived was marked by significant historical events. She witnessed the rise of modern Greece as a nation and played a role in shaping its cultural and political landscape. Her marriage to Otto I brought the Oldenburg dynasty to Greece, and her influence on Greek society was felt for generations. This engraving is a testament to the beauty and grace of Amalia of Oldenburg, as well as her historical significance as a royal figure of the 19th century. It serves as a reminder of a time when European monarchies held great power and influence, and the lives of the royals were marked by grandeur and tradition.
