Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga (1533-1594): A Spanish Nobleman, Soldier, and Epic Poet This striking bust portrays Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga, a prominent figure in Spanish history. Born in Bermeo, a town in the Basque Country of Spain, Ercilla y Zúñiga rose to fame as a nobleman, soldier, and epic poet. During his time in Chile (1556-1563), he fought valiantly against the indigenous Araucanians, or Mapuche, in what is now southern Chile. It was during this period that he began composing his magnum opus, "La Araucana," a historical epic poem considered one of the greatest works in Spanish literature. Ercilla y Zúñiga's military career began in 1553 when he joined the Spanish army to fight against the Ottomans in the Battle of Djerba. He later served in the Italian Wars and in Peru before being sent to Chile to quell the indigenous uprisings. His experiences in Chile inspired him to write "La Araucana," a work that vividly depicts the harsh realities of the conquest and the heroism of the Spanish soldiers. The bust, sculpted in the 16th century, captures the intensity and determination of this remarkable man. Ercilla y Zúñiga's legacy extends beyond his military and literary accomplishments, as he is also remembered for his contributions to the Spanish language. His use of colloquialisms and regional dialects in "La Araucana" helped enrich the Spanish language and broaden its reach. This impressive bust serves as a testament to the enduring impact of this remarkable Spanish nobleman, soldier, and epic poet.
