Alhambra Theatre, Leicester Square, WC1

Promotional postcard for the Alhambra Theatre, London. Promotional postcard for the Alhambra Theatre, London, WC1. The Alhambra was a popular theatre and music hall located on the east side of Leicester Square, in London. It was built originally as The Royal Panopticon of Science and Arts opening on 18 March 1854. It was closed after two years and reopened as the Alhambra. The building was demolished in 1936. The name was also adopted by many other British music hall theatres located elsewhere; in Bradford, in Hull and in Glasgow etc. The name comes from association with the Moorish splendour of the Alhambra palace in Granada. EDITORS COMMENTS
Step right up and prepare to be entertained at the magnificent Alhambra Theatre, located in the heart of London's Leicester Square, WC1. This postcard, dating back to the early 1900s, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and excitement that once filled the halls of this iconic venue. Originally built as The Royal Panopticon of Science and Arts in 1854, the theatre underwent a transformation just two years later and became the Alhambra. Named after the Moorish palace in Granada, the Alhambra Theatre was known for its variety shows, pantomimes, and theatrical productions that drew crowds from all corners of the city. The building, with its ornate facade and elegant design, stood as a beacon of entertainment for over eighty years before its eventual demolition in 1936. This promotional postcard invites us to imagine the magic and wonder that once filled the stage, as performers dazzled audiences with their acts of acrobatics, music, comedy, and more. A cherished piece of history, this postcard serves as a reminder of the rich theatrical heritage that continues to thrive in London to this day.
