This engraving captures the visage of Vasile Alexandri (1821-1890), a renowned Rumanian poet whose works continue to resonate with readers over a century after his death. Born in the Moldavian village of Hlipiceni, Alexandri's literary career began in earnest when he published his first collection of poems, "Flori fugite" (Fugitive Flowers), in 1845. His poetry, which often explored themes of love, nature, and the human condition, was deeply influenced by the folk traditions of his native land. Alexandri's literary prowess earned him recognition both in Romania and beyond its borders. In 1859, he was appointed as the editor of the newspaper "Timpul," a position he held until 1864. During this time, he also served as the secretary of the Moldavian Academy. In 1863, Alexandri published his most famous work, "Izbavitorul" (The Savior), a collection of poems that was widely acclaimed for its emotional depth and poetic beauty. Despite his literary success, Alexandri's life was not without hardship. He experienced financial difficulties and was forced to leave Romania in 1876 due to political unrest. He spent the remainder of his days in exile in Russia, where he continued to write and publish his works. This engraving, created in 1890, captures the dignified and thoughtful expression of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of artistic expression and the preservation of his cultural heritage.
