EDITORS COMMENTS

In this photograph, taken by renowned entomologist Jon Martin in the lush Chiquibul Forest Reserve of Las Cuevas, Belize, in June 2002, we witness a rare and beautiful moment between two Harlequin Beetles, Acrocinus longimanus, engaged in the act of mating on newly-cut logs of the breadnut tree. The Harlequin Beetle, a member of the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae), is a striking and iconic insect of the Central American rainforest. The Harlequin Beetle is known for its vibrant colors and distinctive long antennae, which can reach up to twice the length of its body. This giant invertebrate, belonging to the order Coleoptera and the class Insecta, is a fascinating member of the Hexapoda phylum, which also includes spiders and mites. The Harlequin Beetle's preferred habitat is the dense rainforest, where it feeds on the sap of various trees, including the breadnut tree. The newly-cut logs in this photograph provide an ideal breeding ground for the beetles, as they offer a source of food and shelter. The Harlequin Beetle's mating ritual is a spectacle to behold. The male and female engage in a courtship dance, during which the male displays his bright colors and long antennae to attract the female. Once she is receptive, they mate, with the female laying her eggs in the logs or trees. This photograph is a testament to the beauty and intricacy of the natural world, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving habitats like the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, where the Harlequin Beetle and other wondrous creatures can thrive.
