EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Sir Abraham Roberts (1784-1873), a distinguished soldier and the father of renowned British military leader, Field Marshal Earl Roberts. Born in County Donegal, Ireland, Abraham Roberts joined the British Army in 1803, serving in the Peninsular War against Napoleon Bonaparte. He rose through the ranks, becoming a Major-General in 1854 and a Full General in 1861. Roberts' military career was marked by several significant achievements. He played a crucial role in the capture of Mauritius from the French in 1810, and later led the British forces in the First Anglo-Afghan War from 1839 to 1842. Despite his successes, Roberts faced setbacks and controversies, including the infamous retreat from Kabul that resulted in the deaths of thousands of British soldiers and civilians. Despite these challenges, Roberts remained a respected figure in the British military. His son, Frederick Sleigh Roberts, born in 1832, would go on to become one of the most celebrated military leaders of the Victorian era. Known as 'Bobs' or 'Bobbie' to his family, Frederick Roberts followed in his father's footsteps, serving in the Crimean War and later leading the British forces to victory in the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Second Boer War. This photograph of Sir Abraham Roberts, taken during his later years, offers a glimpse into the life of a soldier who played a pivotal role in shaping British military history. His legacy extends beyond his own achievements, as his son's accomplishments cemented the Roberts name as a symbol of British military prowess.
