After completing his studies, Kastner taught mathematics at the University of Leipzig, where he published his first major work, "Anfangsgründe der Arithmetik und Geometrie" (Elements of Arithmetic and Geometry) in 1748. However, Kastner's passion extended beyond mathematics. He was also an accomplished composer of epigrams, a form of short, witty poetry. His collection of epigrams, "Scherzhaftes und Ernsthaftes" (Witty and Serious), was published in 1757 and gained widespread acclaim. The epigrams were admired for their clever wordplay, profound insights, and humor. Despite his numerous accomplishments, Kastner's life was not without challenges. He faced financial difficulties and was forced to leave Leipzig in 1763 due to a dispute with the university. He spent the remainder of his life in various locations, including Berlin, where he continued to write and publish works on mathematics and epigrams.
