EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken on September 15, 1914, members of the 2nd Scots Guards bid farewell to the historic Tower of London as they prepare to march off to camp in the New Forest for the formation of the 7th Division during the First World War. The soldiers, many of whom are seen smiling up at the camera, seem to carry a sense of camaraderie and excitement as they embark on their military journey. The iconic Beefeater, a ceremonial guard at the Tower, watches on from the side, adding a sense of tradition and history to the scene. The 2nd Scots Guards, a distinguished regiment of the British Army, were among the first to respond to the call to arms when war was declared on August 4, 1914. Their departure from the Tower marked the beginning of their long and arduous journey into the unknown, as they marched towards the front lines with their rifles slung over their shoulders. The New Forest in Hampshire became the temporary home for the 7th Division, which was made up of various regiments from across the country. The soldiers spent several weeks in the forest undergoing training and preparing for the battles that lay ahead. This photograph captures a moment of hope and determination, as these brave men leave their historic past behind and step forward into the uncertain future of war time.
