2nd Duke of Westminster in Cairo, WW1
Major Hugh Arthur Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster (1879 - 1953), pictured at Shepheards Hotel, Cairo just after his return from his famous motor dash on the Senoussi camp in the direction of Mersa Matru, west of the Egyptian capital. He served with the Cheshire Yeomanry during the First World War and took part in their 1916 campaign in Egypt, as part of the Western Frontier Force under General William Peyton. The Duke (then a major) commanded the armoured cars of the regiment and took part in the destruction of a Senussi force at the Battle of Agagia on 26 February 1916. On 14 March 1916, he led the armoured cars on a raid that destroyed the enemy camp at Bir Asiso. Learning that the crews of HMT Moorina and HMS Tara were being held at Bir Hakkim, he led the nine armoured cars - with three armed but unarmoured cars and a further 28 cars and ambulances - on a 120-mile dash to rescue them before returning. The Senussi withdrew rather than engage in a fight. He received the DSO for this exploit. Date: 1916

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the 2nd Duke of Westminster, Major Hugh Arthur Grosvenor (1879-1953), is seen relaxing at Shepheards Hotel in Cairo following his daring motor dash towards the Senussi camp at Mersa Matruh in Egypt during the First World War. The Duke served with the Cheshire Yeomanry and played a pivotal role in their 1916 campaign in Egypt as part of the Western Frontier Force under General William Peyton. As a major, the Duke commanded the armoured cars of the regiment and took part in the Battle of Agagia on 26 February 1916, where the Cheshire Yeomanry successfully destroyed a Senussi force. On 14 March 1916, he led the armoured cars on a raid that annihilated the enemy camp at Bir Asiso. In an audacious move, he then led nine armoured cars, along with three armed but unarmoured cars and 28 additional cars and ambulances, on a 120-mile dash to rescue the crews of HMT Moorina and HMS Tara, who were being held captive at Bir Hakkim. Faced with the prospect of battle, the Senussi forces retreated. The Duke's bravery and leadership during this mission earned him the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). This photograph, taken shortly after his return to Cairo, captures the Duke in a moment of respite amidst the chaos and danger of the battlefield. The Duke's military accomplishments during the First World War demonstrate his courage, strategic acumen, and unwavering commitment to duty.
