The Duke, dressed in the full regalia of his noble title, exudes an air of authority and refinement. Born on March 1, 1811, James Hamilton was the eldest son of James Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Abercorn. He succeeded his father as the 2nd Marquess in 1858 and was later created Duke of Abercorn in 1868. The Duke's political career was marked by his service as a Member of Parliament for County Down from 1835 to 1847 and as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1877 to 1880. During his tenure as Lord Lieutenant, Abercorn played a significant role in the political and social life of Ireland. He oversaw the implementation of various policies aimed at improving the living conditions of the Irish people, including the establishment of the Irish Land League and the implementation of the Land Act of 1870. Despite his efforts to promote stability and progress in Ireland, Abercorn faced numerous challenges during his time in office. The Irish Land War, which began in 1879, posed a significant threat to the peace and order of the country. Abercorn worked tirelessly to address the root causes of the conflict, but his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and he resigned as Lord Lieutenant in 1880.
