11th Earl of Westmorland, John Fane (1784-1859): A Diplomatic Career Spanning the Peninsula War This evocative portrait captures the 11th Earl of Westmorland, John Fane, in the prime of his diplomatic career. Born in 1784, Fane was a prominent figure in British politics and diplomacy during the early 19th century, serving under the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsula War. Fane's political and diplomatic career began in earnest in 1805 when he was appointed as an Extraordinary Envoy to the Court of St. James's by the Duke of Wellington. This marked the beginning of a long and distinguished diplomatic service, which saw Fane representing British interests in various European courts. During the Peninsula War, Fane served as the British Ambassador to the Court of Madrid from 1812 to 1814. His diplomatic skills were instrumental in securing the support of the Spanish government for the British and allied forces under Wellington's command. Fane's efforts contributed significantly to the eventual victory of the Allied forces over the French in the Peninsula War. After the war, Fane continued to serve in various diplomatic posts, including as the British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1831 to 1834. He played a crucial role in negotiating a treaty with the Ottoman Empire, which secured British commercial interests in the region. Fane's diplomatic career came to an end in 1852 when he retired from public life. He passed away in 1859, leaving behind a rich legacy as a skilled diplomat and a key figure in British foreign policy during the early 19th century. This portrait, taken during his diplomatic heyday, captures the intelligence, sophistication, and gravitas that defined Fane's public persona.
