EDITORS COMMENTS
This hauntingly beautiful image depicts the Martyrdom of Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. According to Christian tradition, Bartholomew preached the gospel in Armenia and India before returning to Armenia, where he was eventually captured and brought before King Astyages. Despite being offered riches and honors if he renounced his faith, Bartholomew remained steadfast in his beliefs and was sentenced to death. The martyrdom is depicted in this print as a gruesome yet reverent scene. Bartholomew, dressed in the robes of a bishop, stands calmly before the king, who holds a sword in one hand and a scroll in the other. The scroll bears the king's decree of Bartholomew's execution. A soldier, dressed in armor and holding a spear, stands behind the king, ready to carry out the sentence. Bartholomew's body is shown being flayed alive, with his skin being peeled back to reveal the muscles and bones beneath. This grisly detail is a reminder of the extreme persecution that early Christians faced for their faith. Despite the violence, Bartholomew's expression remains serene and peaceful, a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to his beliefs. The print, created in the late 19th or early 20th century, is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by early Christians for their faith. The intricate details of the image, from the folds of Bartholomew's robes to the textures of the king's armor, transport the viewer back in time to an era of religious persecution and martyrdom. The print serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the courage of those who have given their lives for their beliefs.
