EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back in time to the mid-19th century, where we witness a breathtaking encounter with four distinct species of whales: the Porpoise, Humpback (Cetingutus iridis), Beluga (Delphinapterus leucas), and Narwhal (Monodon monoceros). The Porpoise, also known as the common porpoise, is the smallest of the ocean's true whales. With a sleek, streamlined body and a short, rounded beak, it is often mistaken for a dolphin. The Porpoise is a common sight in shallow, temperate and tropical waters around the world. The Humpback Whale, with its distinctive hump and long pectoral fins, is a true giant of the sea. These majestic creatures were once hunted to near extinction for their oil and baleen. However, their population has rebounded in recent decades, and they can now be found in all major oceans. The Beluga Whale, also known as the sea canary due to its melodic vocalizations, is the only completely white whale. It is found in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, where it thrives in the icy waters. Belugas are known for their agility and playful behavior. The Narwhal, with its long, spiraled tusk, is one of the most enigmatic creatures of the sea. This Arctic whale is the only one to possess a true tooth that extends from its upper lip. Narwhals are elusive and difficult to study, making them a subject of fascination and intrigue. This photograph, taken circa 1840, offers a rare glimpse into the history of marine life and the natural world. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving these magnificent creatures and their habitats for future generations to enjoy.
