EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the distinguished face of Auguste Mariette, a French archaeologist and Egyptologist, in the later years of his illustrious career. Taken in 1881, Mariette is seen here in a thoughtful pose, wearing a traditional fez and a serious expression. Born on October 1, 1821, in Paris, France, Mariette's passion for ancient civilizations began at a young age. He pursued his studies in archaeology and Egyptology, eventually joining the French Consulate in Egypt in 1852. Mariette's groundbreaking discoveries in Egypt include the tomb of Pharaoh Seti I in the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hathor at Dendera. He also played a significant role in the establishment of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Mariette's contributions to the field of Egyptology were immense, and his work laid the foundation for future archaeological discoveries in Egypt. Despite his many accomplishments, Mariette's later years were marked by controversy and scandal. He was accused of selling antiquities on the black market, which tarnished his reputation and led to his resignation from the Egyptian Antiquities Service in 1881. However, his legacy as a pioneering archaeologist and Egyptologist endures, and his discoveries continue to inspire and fascinate scholars and enthusiasts alike. This photograph, taken in the final year of Mariette's life, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who dedicated his career to uncovering the mysteries of ancient Egypt. With his weathered features and thoughtful expression, Mariette appears as a wise and introspective figure, deep in thought about the discoveries he made and the knowledge he uncovered during his remarkable journey through history.
