1703 1768 Marie Poland Stanislaw Leszczynska

EDITORS COMMENTS
"Marie Leszczynska, born in 1703 in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, was the daughter of King Stanislaw I and his second wife, Princess Catherine Opalinska. At the age of 15, Marie was married to King Louis XV of France in a grand ceremony held in Versailles in 1725. The union was a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening the political ties between France and Poland. As the Queen of France, Marie was known for her beauty, intelligence, and piety. She brought with her a strong Polish court, including her trusted confidant, the Abbé Prévost, who became her advisor and a significant influence on the French court. Marie was also a patron of the arts and sciences, and her salon at Versailles was a gathering place for intellectuals and artists. Marie's marriage to Louis XV was a happy one, and they had seven children together. However, tragedy struck when their eldest son, the Dauphin, died in 1729. Marie was devastated by the loss, and her grief was profound. She retreated from court life for a time, but eventually returned to her duties as queen. Marie continued to serve as a diplomat and advisor to her husband until his death in 1774. She remained in France until her own death in 1768, and was buried in the Basilica of Saint-Denis. Marie Leszczynska's legacy as a queen and diplomat is still remembered in both France and Poland, and she is often seen as a symbol of the cultural exchange between the two countries during the 18th century." This print captures Marie Leszczynska in her regal attire, likely taken during her time at the French court. Her elegant and poised demeanor is evident, reflecting her status as a queen and diplomat. The intricate details of her clothing and the opulent setting further emphasize her position and the grandeur of the French court during the 18th century.
