EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting image captures the young Maria Teresa Isabella, later Queen of Sicily, as a little girl in the year 1752. Dressed in a elegant red gown with a white petticoat, the future queen looks out at the viewer with a curious and inquisitive expression. Her dark curls are neatly arranged beneath a white lace cap, and she wears a pair of delicate white shoes adorned with red bows. Maria Teresa Isabella was born on November 6, 1747, in Madrid, Spain, to King Ferdinand VI of Spain and his wife, Barbara of Braganza. At the age of five, she was betrothed to the future King Ferdinand III of Sicily, who was 21 years her senior. The marriage was arranged to strengthen the political alliance between Spain and Sicily. In 1763, at the age of 16, Maria Teresa Isabella was sent to Palermo, Sicily, to marry her husband. The wedding ceremony took place on January 3, 1764. Despite the age difference and the political nature of their union, Maria Teresa Isabella and Ferdinand III developed a deep and loving relationship. They had eight children together, five of whom survived to adulthood. Maria Teresa Isabella ruled as Queen of Sicily from 1812 until her death in 1807. She was known for her intelligence, her kindness, and her devotion to her people. This early photograph of the young Maria Teresa Isabella offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who would go on to become one of the most beloved and respected figures in Sicilian history.
