EDITORS COMMENTS
Maria Jose of Belgium, born on January 4, 1906, was the eldest daughter of King Albert I of Belgium and his wife, Queen Elisabeth. Known for her striking curly hair and captivating beauty, Maria Jose was a beloved figure in European royal circles. In this photograph, taken in 1906, the young princess is depicted in a formal portrait, dressed in a long, elegant gown and holding a posy of flowers. At the time of this image, Maria Jose was not yet married. However, her life was about to take a dramatic turn. In 1907, she was betrothed to Umberto, the Prince of Piedmont and the heir to the throne of the House of Savoy. The marriage was a strategic alliance, designed to strengthen the ties between Belgium and Italy. The wedding took place on October 28, 1907, in Brussels. Maria Jose was just 11 years old, and Umberto was 24. Despite their age difference, the couple's marriage was a happy one, and they went on to have five children together. In this photograph, Maria Jose's youthful beauty and regal bearing are on full display. Her curly hair, cascading down her shoulders, adds to her charm and allure. The image is a testament to a bygone era of European royalty, a time when the lives of monarchs and their families were closely intertwined, and alliances were forged through marriage. Maria Jose's life was marked by tragedy as well as happiness. Her husband Umberto was assassinated in Moncalieri in 1934, and Maria Jose became the Queen of Italy. She ruled as regent for her son, Umberto II, until his coming of age in 1946. Maria Jose remained a beloved figure in both Belgium and Italy until her death in 2001, at the age of 95. This photograph is a poignant reminder of her beauty, grace, and historical significance.
