Margherita, born in 1851 as Princess Margherita of Savoy-Carignano, was the eldest daughter of King Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy and his second wife, Queen Margherita of Savoy. In 1868, she married her first cousin, Umberto I, who would later become King of Italy in 1878. Margherita's elegant attire in this photograph reflects the opulence and grandeur of the Italian royalty during the late 19th century.
