This photograph captures Princess Margaret of Connaught, the future Duchess of Scania and Queen Consort of Sweden, in a tender moment with her newborn baby in 1906. The Princess, born on January 15, 1882, was the eldest daughter of Prince and Princess of Connaught, and the granddaughter of Queen Victoria. She married Prince Gustav Adolf of Sweden, Duke of Västergötland, on May 15, 1905, at the age of 23. The couple's first child, Prince Carl Gustaf, was born on May 12, 1911, and is seen here in his mother's arms, wrapped in delicate lace. The Princess's elegant and refined appearance, with her striking dark hair and piercing gaze, is a testament to her royal lineage. Princess Margaret's life was marked by tragedy and triumph. She lost her husband in a hunting accident in 1947, and her eldest son, Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf, was killed in action during World War II. However, she continued to serve as a steadfast and devoted mother to her surviving children, and played an important role in Swedish royal life. When her father-in-law, King Gustaf V, died in 1950, Princess Margaret became Queen Consort of Sweden as the wife of the new King, Gustav VI Adolf. She reigned alongside her husband until his death in 1973. This photograph, taken over a century ago, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on Swedish history.
