1505 1544 Classics Educated Eldest Erasmus Margaret Philosophy Roper Translated

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the intellectual brilliance and refined elegance of Margaret Roper (nee More), eldest daughter of Sir Thomas More. Born in 1505, Margaret was educated in the classics and philosophy, making her an exceptional scholar for her time. Her correspondence with the renowned Dutch humanist Desiderius Erasmus began in 1527, when she was just 22 years old. Their intellectual exchange continued for over two decades, making her one of Erasmus' most devoted correspondents. Margaret's deep understanding of philosophy and her fluency in Latin enabled her to translate several of Erasmus' works into English. Among her most notable translations are "The Praise of Folly" and "The Institution of a Christian Man," which significantly contributed to the dissemination of Erasmus' ideas in England. Margaret's intellectual pursuits did not end with her correspondence and translations. She also raised five children, instilling in them a love for learning and the importance of a virtuous life. Her dedication to her family and her intellectual pursuits exemplify the balance that many women of the Tudor era strove to achieve. This portrait, likely painted around 1544, captures the essence of Margaret Roper's intellect, grace, and strength. Her enduring legacy as a scholar, translator, and devoted mother continues to inspire generations of women and scholars alike.
