EDITORS COMMENTS
Margaret Leslie, Countess of Buccleuch: A Lady of Imposing Presence (1625-1688) This striking portrait captures the imposing presence of Margaret Leslie, Countess of Buccleuch, a noblewoman of Scottish descent who lived during the late 17th century. Born in 1625, Margaret was the eldest daughter of the 1st Earl of Rothes and Lady Elizabeth Seton. She married the 1st Earl of Buccleuch, Walter Scott, in 1649, and became Countess of Buccleuch upon her husband's elevation to the earldom in 1651. Margaret's impressive stature and regal bearing are evident in this portrait, which showcases her elegant attire and confident demeanor. The intricately designed gown, adorned with lace and embroidery, is a testament to the opulence and wealth of the Scottish nobility during this period. The Countess's pearl necklace, elaborate headdress, and delicate white gloves add to her refined appearance. Despite her noble status, Margaret's life was not without challenges. She outlived her husband, who died in 1674, and was left to manage the vast Buccleuch estates and raise their eleven children alone. Her strength and resilience were put to the test during the turbulent political climate of the time, including the English Civil War and the subsequent Restoration of the Monarchy. Margaret's legacy extends beyond her role as a noblewoman and mother. She was known for her generosity and charitable works, including the establishment of a school for girls in Melrose, Scotland, and her support of the local church. Her passing in 1688 marked the end of an era for the Buccleuch family, leaving behind a lasting impression as a lady of imposing presence and unwavering strength.
