EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determination and resolve of British forces led by Lord Roberts during the Second Anglo-Afghan War in August 1880. The scene depicts Lord Roberts, a renowned military leader, marching towards Kandahar, a strategic city in Afghanistan. The British forces were on a mission to inflict a decisive victory on the Afghans and disperse their forces completely. The year was 1880, and the Second Anglo-Afghan War was in full swing. The British East India Company, which had previously ruled Afghanistan through a puppet monarch, had been expelled from Kabul in 1879, leading to a full-scale invasion by the British Army. Lord Roberts, who had taken command of the British forces after the resignation of General Sir Frederick Roberts, was determined to reclaim Kandahar and restore British control over Afghanistan. The photograph shows Lord Roberts leading his troops on horseback, with a determined expression on his face and his sword held high. The soldiers, dressed in their red coats and bearskins, follow closely behind, their faces set with determination and focus. The vast, arid landscape of Afghanistan stretches out behind them, a stark reminder of the challenges they would face in the coming days. Despite the harsh conditions and the tenacious resistance of the Afghans, Lord Roberts' forces were successful in their mission. They reached Kandahar on September 1, 1880, and defeated the Afghan forces in a decisive battle on September 1st. The victory at Kandahar marked a turning point in the war, and the British were able to reclaim control over much of Afghanistan. This photograph is a testament to the courage and determination of Lord Roberts and his troops during a pivotal moment in history. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers in the pursuit of victory and the enduring legacy of the British military in Afghanistan.
