1743 1793 Bosselman Marat Revolutionary Raffet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print depicts Jean-Paul Marat, a pivotal figure in the French Revolution, in the midst of dictating his newspaper, "L'Ami du Peuple" (The Friend of the People), to his amanuensis, Charlotte Raffet, and her assistant, Pierre Bosselman. Marat, born in 1743, was a French physician and political theorist who rose to prominence during the Revolution for his radical political writings. He was a strong advocate for the rights of the common people and was a vocal critic of the monarchy and the privileged classes. The image captures Marat in his bath, a detail that has become synonymous with his legacy. Marat suffered from a skin condition that made him sensitive to the cold, and he believed that bathing in warm water helped alleviate his symptoms. This unusual habit, combined with his fiery rhetoric and revolutionary fervor, earned him the nickname "The People's Tribune." Despite his controversial methods and controversial personality, Marat's influence on the Revolution cannot be denied. He was a key figure in the fall of the Bastille in 1789 and played a significant role in the establishment of the First French Republic in 1792. However, his radicalism and violent rhetoric ultimately led to his downfall. On July 13, 1793, he was assassinated by Charlotte Corday, a royalist sympathizer. This print, produced in 1793, is a testament to the complex and tumultuous period of French history. Marat's image, with Raffet and Bosselman, serves as a reminder of the crucial role that the written word and the press played in shaping the revolutionary movement and the course of history.
