Signs of the Zodiac in Early Color by John Bevis ÔÇô Aquarius - January 20 ÔÇô February 18

This colorfully illustrated Star Chart for Aquarius has been completely art-worked from the Aquarius plate featured on John Beviss Star Charts of the signs of the Zodiac by John Bevis c1747-1749.
These extremely detailed charts were compiled by Bevis, an eighteenth century physician-turned astronomer, whose other claim to fame is as the discoverer of the Crab Nebula,
John Bevis (November 10, 1695 - November 6, 1771) and the Uranographia
Historians of astronomy name four great celestial atlases: Bayer s, Hevelius s, Flamsteed s, and Bode s. To this, they add one great work that could have been: Beviss Uranographia.
John Bevis was an Oxford trained physician and amateur astronomer, Bevis set up a private observatory in North London in 1738, where he made observations, which led to his attempt to create the second British Celestial Atlas. In the mid 18th Century, Bevis produced his Uranographia Britannica, which was the first major celestial atlas published after the posthumous publication of the Atlas of John Flamsteed, Englands first Royal Astronomer.
Careful cross-referencing of the dedications on each work allows the date for the creation of the plates to be constrained to between 1747-1749. By comparing the titles suggested in the work to Royal Society and clergy records, upper and lower bounds of the date of creation can be made.

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the Aquarius plate from John Bevis' Star Charts of the signs of the Zodiac, beautifully transformed into a vibrant and colorful illustration. Created between 1747-1749, this artwork is a testament to Bevis' meticulous attention to detail as he compiled these extraordinary celestial charts. John Bevis was not only an esteemed physician but also an amateur astronomer who made significant contributions to the field. Notably, he discovered the Crab Nebula, solidifying his place in astronomical history. His dedication and passion for astronomy led him to establish a private observatory in North London in 1738. Bevis's Uranographia Britannica became one of the most important celestial atlases of its time, following closely after John Flamsteed's Atlas. Historians consider it among the great works that could have been alongside Bayer's, Hevelius', Flamsteed's, and Bode's celestial atlases. The careful examination of dedications on each work has allowed historians to determine that these plates were created within a narrow timeframe between 1747-1749. By comparing titles suggested in Bevis' work with records from institutions like the Royal Society and clergy archives, scholars have been able to establish approximate dates for their creation. This print offers us a glimpse into both artistry and scientific exploration during the eighteenth century. It serves as a reminder of John Bevis' remarkable achievements as both an astronomer and creator of this stunning visual representation of Aquarius – one sign among many that continue to captivate our imaginations today.
