EDITORS COMMENTS
This map print depicts the course of the historic Schneider Trophy Air Race held on September 13, 1931. The Schneider Trophy was an international air racing competition established in 1913, named after the French industrialist, James Schneider. The race aimed to promote the development of seaplane technology and high-speed flight. In the 1931 edition of the race, held off the coast of Calshot, Southampton, United Kingdom, Flight Lieutenant John Boothman from the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) emerged as the victor. He piloted the Supermarine S6B, S1515 seaplane, reaching a breathtaking speed of 340 miles per hour (547 kilometers per hour). Boothman's achievement broke the previous record set by his teammate, Sub-Lieutenant Leslie Hammond, who had won the 1930 race. The Schneider Trophy Air Race of 1931 marked a significant milestone in aviation history, as it showcased the groundbreaking advancements in aircraft design and engineering. The Supermarine S6B, which was powered by a Rolls-Royce R V12 engine, set the stage for the development of more advanced military and civilian aircraft. This map print serves as a fascinating reminder of the thrilling history of aviation and the pioneering spirit that drove the Schneider Trophy races. It is a must-have for aviation enthusiasts, historians, and anyone interested in the early days of high-speed flight.
