EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the stoic and resolute gaze of Major R R Willis VC, an English soldier who earned the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be bestowed upon British and Commonwealth forces. Born in 1876, Willis displayed exceptional bravery during World War I, particularly during the Battle of Neuve-Chapelle in March 1915. He led his company in an attack on German trenches, despite being severely wounded in the leg. Undeterred, he continued to rally his men and lead them forward, ultimately capturing the enemy position. For his actions, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the first VC to be awarded to a member of the Royal Fusiliers in the war. The photograph, taken in 1966, shows Major Willis in his military uniform, adorned with his Victoria Cross decoration. The image is a testament to the historical significance of his bravery and the enduring legacy of the Victoria Cross as a symbol of heroism and sacrifice.
