Workers in the aircraft component repair department during the Second World War. The workers are thought to be making parts for aircraft wings, probably for Spitfires, in what was the H.T.P. Motors showroom. Aircraft repair staff comprised 100 operatives, 50% of which were women. At their peak they produced 500 components a month for Spitfires, including tail planes and rudders. In 2018, this building is the Pannier Market on Back Quay, Truro. P8655 Newtonia was a presentation Spitfire IIa paid for by the people of Newton Abbot and District. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history at the Machine shop of H. T. P. Motors Ltd. in Truro, Cornwall during 1941. The image showcases dedicated workers in the aircraft component repair department during the Second World War, diligently crafting parts for aircraft wings, possibly for iconic Spitfires. The photograph reveals an interesting aspect of this particular machine shop as it was located within what used to be the H. T. P. Motors showroom. It is fascinating to see how this space transformed from showcasing automobiles to becoming a hub for vital wartime production. During its peak, this department employed 100 skilled operatives, half of whom were women - a testament to their invaluable contribution during these challenging times. Together, they manufactured an impressive 500 components per month solely for Spitfires, including essential tail planes and rudders. Fast forward to 2018 and this historic building has been repurposed into the Pannier Market on Back Quay in Truro - a vibrant reminder of its rich past and evolution over time. It is worth noting that P8655 Newtonia holds special significance as it was a presentation Spitfire IIa generously funded by the people of Newton Abbot and District. Unfortunately, we are unable to credit the photographer responsible for capturing this remarkable snapshot that now resides within the Royal Cornwall Museum's collection.
