1531 1586 Jurist Ruff Matthaeus
EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Matthaeus Van Wesenbeke, also known as Boulonoi, a prominent Dutch jurist of the late 16th century. Born in Antwerp in 1531, Van Wesenbeke studied law at the University of Louvain and went on to become a respected member of the Dutch legal community. He served as a judge in the Court of Holland and later became a member of the Great Council of Mechlin. The image showcases Van Wesenbeke's distinguished attire, which includes a high ruff collar and a fur-lined robe. The ruff, a fashionable accessory of the time, was worn around the neck and was often made of starched linen or fabric. The fur-lined robe, a symbol of wealth and status, would have kept Van Wesenbeke warm during the colder months. Despite his professional accomplishments, Van Wesenbeke's life was not without controversy. In 1586, he was implicated in a plot to assassinate the Archduke Matthias of Austria. The plot was discovered, and Van Wesenbeke was arrested and put on trial. He was found guilty and sentenced to death, but the sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. Van Wesenbeke spent the rest of his days in prison, where he continued to practice law and write legal treatises. Despite the controversy surrounding his later years, Van Wesenbeke's contributions to Dutch jurisprudence were significant. He authored several important legal texts, including "De Jure Fidei" and "De Jure Conjugali." His work helped shape the legal landscape of the Dutch Republic and solidified his place in Dutch legal history. This portrait, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the life of a complex and influential figure in Dutch history. Van Wesenbeke's story is a reminder of the intricacies of the past and the enduring power of the law.
