Marc-Antoine Muret, also known as M-A Muret or simply Muret de Larmessin, was a renowned French poet and humanist of the 16th century. Born in Larmessin, France, in 1526, Muret was a leading figure in the French Platonist movement, which emphasized the study of classical Greek and Roman texts. This oval portrait depicts Muret in the prime of his life, with a thoughtful expression and a cascade of curly hair framing his face. The poet's attire, including a flowing collar and a fur-trimmed robe, reflects the fashion of the time and his status as a scholar and intellectual.
