EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature painting depicts Martin Luther, the German theologian and monk whose ideas gave rise to the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. Born on November 10, 1483, in Eisleben, Germany, Luther studied at the University of Erfurt before joining the Augustinian Order in 1505. However, it was during a storm in 1505 that Luther reportedly discovered a passage in Paul's Epistle to the Romans, which led him to question the sale of indulgences, a practice that he came to view as a corruption of the Church. In 1517, Luther wrote his 95 Theses, a list of criticisms of the sale of indulgences, which he nailed to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. This act is considered the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. Luther's ideas spread rapidly throughout Europe, leading to the formation of Protestant denominations and the division of Western Christianity. Despite facing opposition from the Catholic Church and the Holy Roman Empire, Luther continued to write and teach, translating the Bible into German and producing works such as "On the Freedom of a Christian" and "The Small Catechism." He was excommunicated from the Catholic Church in 1521 and was declared an outlaw by the Emperor Charles V in 1521. However, Luther was protected by the princes of the Holy Roman Empire, who saw him as a valuable ally against the centralizing power of the Church and the Emperor. This miniature painting, likely created around the time of Luther's death in 1546, shows him in his later years, with a serious expression and a furrowed brow, reflecting the weight of the controversies and conflicts that marked his life. Despite the challenges he faced, Luther's legacy as a reformer and a theologian continues to shape the Christian faith and Western civilization to this day.
