Quichua Collection

Quichua (Erethizontidae) is a family of mammals native to South America and are known as New World porcupines and consist of four genera: Coendou, Sphiggurus, Echinoprocta, and Chaetomys and can nocturnal animals that live in forests and grasslands, where they feed on fruits, nuts, leaves, bark, and roots. They have long spines that cover their bodies for protection from predators. They have poor vision but an excellent sense of smell which helps them find food at night. They use their large front claws for digging burrows to sleep in during the day or when threatened by predators and can solitary animals that come together only during mating season or when raising young offspring. Their population is declining due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as logging and farming practices. Conservation efforts are needed to protect these unique creatures from extinction in the wild.
