EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures Luis Filipe, Prince Royal of Portugal, in a formal portrait worn during his tenure as Regent following the death of his father, King Carlos I, in 1889. Born on March 23, 1887, Luis Filipe was the eldest son of the monarch and his queen, Amélie of Orléans. As Regent, he assumed the duties of the monarchy while his father was alive, but was not officially crowned until 1902. Tragically, both Luis Filipe and his father were assassinated on February 1, 1908, in Lisbon, Portugal, by two members of a revolutionary society known as the Carbonaria. The assassins, Fernandes Costa and Alves dos Reis, fired upon the open Royal carriage as it passed through the streets of Lisbon, killing both the King and his eldest son. The assassination marked the end of the monarchy in Portugal and the beginning of the First Portuguese Republic. In this photograph, Luis Filipe is seen wearing the traditional Portuguese uniform of a military general, complete with a golden crown atop his head. The somber expression on his face speaks to the weight of responsibility he bore as Regent, and the tragic fate that ultimately awaited him. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the brief and ultimately tragic reign of this young prince, who was just 21 years old at the time of his death. The image is a testament to the history and culture of Portugal during a tumultuous period in its history, and is a valuable addition to any collection focused on Portuguese royalty, European history, or the history of republicanism.
