EDITORS COMMENTS
Lucius Cornelius Sulla: The Dictator of Ancient Rome (138-78 BC) This striking image captures the intense and complex character of Lucius Cornelius Sulla, a pivotal figure in the late Roman Republic. Sulla was a Roman general, statesman, and consul, whose political career was marked by opposition to the popular leader Gaius Marius and the waging of a devastating civil war that ultimately led to his rule as Rome's dictator. Born in 138 BC, Sulla rose through the ranks of the Roman military, earning a reputation as a brilliant strategist and a formidable opponent. In 88 BC, he successfully opposed the election of Marius as consul for the seventh time, sparking a bitter political feud between the two men. When Marius and his supporters marched on Rome in 87 BC, Sulla responded by raising an army and marching on the city himself. The resulting civil war was long and brutal, with both sides suffering heavy losses. In 82 BC, Sulla's forces finally captured Rome, and he assumed the role of dictator, ruling the city with an iron fist. Sulla's dictatorship was marked by a series of political and social reforms, as well as a campaign of reprisals against his enemies. Despite his controversial reign, Sulla's legacy is complex and enduring. He is credited with restoring order to Rome after years of political turmoil, and his reforms helped to lay the groundwork for the eventual rise of the Roman Empire. This image of Sulla, with his stern expression and military bearing, serves as a powerful reminder of the complexities and contradictions of ancient Roman politics.
