EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures the enchanting beauty and regal elegance of Louise Marie Therese Bathilde de Bourbon, Princesse de Bourbon, Duchesse de Condé (1750-1822). Daughter of the future King Louis-Philippe I of France, Bathilde was married to Louis, Duc de Condé in 1769, making her the Duchesse de Condé. However, their marriage was terminated by divorce in 1780. Bathilde's striking features, with her piercing blue eyes, delicate complexion, and graceful posture, are on full display in this image. Her elegant attire, adorned with intricate lace and a sumptuous velvet bodice, reflects the opulence and sophistication of the Ancien Régime period in which she lived. The artist, unknown to us, masterfully captures the essence of Bathilde's regal bearing and the refined elegance of the French aristocracy. Despite her young age, Bathilde's life was marked by significant events. Born in the Palace of Versailles, she was raised in the court of her grandfather, Louis XV, and was a lady-in-waiting to Marie Antoinette. Her marriage to Louis de Bourbon, Duc de Condé, was arranged to strengthen the alliance between the Bourbon and Orléans branches of the French royal family. However, the marriage was unhappy, and Bathilde was eventually granted a divorce. After her divorce, Bathilde lived a relatively quiet life, devoting herself to charitable works and the education of her children. She was known for her piety, her generosity, and her deep sense of duty. This portrait, a testament to her beauty and nobility, remains an enduring reminder of the fascinating life of Louise Marie Therese Bathilde de Bourbon, Princesse de Bourbon, Duchesse de Condé.
