This exquisite 17th-century print captures the grandeur and opulence of the royal wedding between King Louis XIII of France and Anne of Austria, which took place on September 22, 1615, at the Basilica of Saint-Denis. The young couple, both in their early twenties, are depicted standing before an ornate altar, surrounded by an array of noblemen and cardinals in richly decorated robes and headdresses. Louis XIII, the third child and eldest surviving son of King Henry IV, ascended to the throne at the age of 10 upon his father's assassination in 1610. He was known for his strong leadership and military prowess, which would serve him well in his reign. Anne of Austria, the daughter of the Spanish King Philip III, was a skilled diplomat and a devout Catholic, who would prove to be a valuable ally for her husband in his dealings with the powerful Spanish monarchy. Their marriage was a significant political alliance, as it strengthened the ties between France and Spain and helped to bring an end to the long-standing conflict between the two powers. The couple went on to have 14 children together, including the future King Louis XIV, who would rule France from 1643 until his death in 1715.
