1. Title: "Louis XII of France, Grandson of Louis d'Orléans (1462-1515)" This evocative portrait captures the regal presence of Louis XII of France, the eldest son of Charles, Duke of Orléans, and his second wife, Marie de Cleves. Born in 1462, Louis was the younger brother of King Charles VI of France and the last Valois king of the House of Valois-Orléans. Louis's early life was marked by political intrigue and exile. After the death of his father in 1498, he returned to France and was appointed as the Lieutenant General of Languedoc. In 1498, he married Jeanne de Valois, the sister of his cousin, King Louis XII of France, who had no heir. This strategic marriage secured Louis's position as the heir to the French throne. In 1514, King Louis XII died without an heir, and Louis XII became King of France. His reign was marked by military campaigns, including the successful siege of Thionville and the capture of the city of Milan. He also sought to strengthen his position by marrying Claude de France, the daughter of King Louis XI, in 1514. This striking portrait, created by the renowned artist Jean Chasselat around 1515, captures the mature and confident demeanor of Louis XII. The king is depicted wearing the robes of the Order of the Holy Spirit, a symbol of his piety and his status as a crusader. The intricate details of his clothing, the rich textures of the fabric, and the subtle use of light and shadow all contribute to the sense of grandeur and nobility conveyed in the image. Louis XII's reign was brief, but his impact on French history was significant. He expanded the French territories, strengthened the monarchy, and left a lasting legacy that would shape the course of French history for generations to come. This portrait serves as a powerful reminder of his reign and the enduring influence of the Valois dynasty in France.
