1773 1850 Citizen Delpech Philippe

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the likeness of Louis-Philippe, King of the French, also known as "The Citizen King" (1773-1850). Louis-Philippe reigned from 1830 until 1848, making him the last king of the Bourbon Restoration and the last monarch of the July Monarchy in France. Born in Versailles, Louis-Philippe was a member of the House of Orléans and a grandson of King Louis Philippe II, Duke of Orléans. He rose to prominence during the French Revolution, when he served as a volunteer in the army and was wounded at the Battle of Valmy in 1792. Despite his royal lineage, Louis-Philippe embraced the ideals of the Revolution and became a prominent figure in the constitutional monarchy that emerged in its aftermath. In this image, taken around 1850 by the renowned French photographer Delpech, Louis-Philippe is depicted in a formal sitting position, wearing the insignia of the Legion of Honor and the Order of the Holy Spirit. The king's expression is serious and regal, yet there is a hint of warmth and approachability in his eyes, reflecting his reputation as a "citizen king" who sought to connect with his people. Louis-Philippe's reign was marked by a period of relative stability and economic prosperity in France, but it was also marred by political instability and social unrest. The Revolution of 1848 ultimately led to his abdication, and he went into exile in England, where he lived out the remainder of his days. This portrait offers a glimpse into the complex legacy of a monarch who straddled the worlds of revolution and royalty, and who remains an intriguing figure in French history.
